This image shows

downtown Staunton in the year 1891.

Landmarks recognizable in modern times include:

  • Train station - lower right hand corner
  • Clock Tower - upper left hand corner
  • Augusta County Courthouse - right center
  • The "Wharf" building (numbered "30") - directly across street from train station
  • The "Board and Batten House" at the corner of Lewis Street and Spring Street (now Johnson St.)

The area where the current farmers' market is located has changed dramatically over the past century. "Spring" street is now called "Johnson" street. What we now know as the "Wharf Parking Lot" was that area on the corner of Lewis and Spring streets and was full of small buildings in the late 19th century.
